Kaleidoscope Eyes

John Lennon

Reminiscing about things from my younger days, as you do, I came across an article about John Lennon – I never realised he was virtually blind which explains a lot and inspired me to this latest series of paintings.

The driving force behind The Beatles he was very influential to me and probably everyone else growing up in the 60’s and 70’s. Both in style as well as music. His death at the time was a real shock.

JB’s favourite songs:

Dream, Across the Universe, Woman, Lucy in the sky with diamonds and Imagine.

Purple Rain

2023, Acrylic on Canvas. 120cms x 90cms x 3.5cms. Finished edges.

Prince

Actually named ‘Prince’ by his father, he was a self-taught musician and a self-styled showman. He is now regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation.

Most influential songs for JB were:

When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret, Sign of the Times, Nothing compares 2 U and of course, Purple Rain.

Hero

2022, Acrylic on Canvas. 120cms x 90cms x 3.5cms. Finished edges.

David Bowie

Coincidentally, my homage to Bowie was completed the day after he was named ‘Britain’s most influential artist of the past half-century.’

I was lucky enough to see him live (around the time of his Let’s Dance Album) and witness his amazing musical and visual style.

JB’s favourite songs:

Man who sold the World, Jean Genie, From Ashes to Ashes, Starman and of course Let’s Dance.

Jailhouse Rock

2023, Acrylic on Canvas. 120cms x 90cms x 3.5cms. Finished edges.

Elvis Presley

The ‘King’ started it all back in 1956 and was considered one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. He was ‘bad’ enough to be loved by the young and talented enough to be loved by everyone else.

An amazing influence across the world.

Most influential songs for JB are:

In the Ghetto, Heartbreak Hotel, Love me Tender, Suspicious Minds and of course Jailhouse Rock.

Purple Haze

2022, Acrylic on Canvas. 120cms x 90cms x 3.5cms. Finished edges.

Jimi Hendrix

In my teens, I was lucky enough to see Jimi Hendrix live and the whole experience had a profound effect.

Luckily, I realised fairly quickly, I would never be able to play the guitar like him!

Best songs for JB are:

Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, his version of Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower and of course Purple Haze.

Killer Queen

2023, Acrylic on Canvas. 120cms x 90cms x 3.5cms. Finished edges.

Freddie Mercury

Probably one of the best singing voices ever – his voice had a four-octave range. Not unusual for top opera singers – which may explain his love for opera.

Another huge influence, though I preferred his earlier work in general.

JB’s all time favourites:

Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen and the last song he wrote before he died, These are the Days of Our Lives.

Painted Black

2023, Acrylic on Canvas. 120cms x 90cms x 3.5cms. Finished edges.

Keith Richards

When the single ‘Painted Black’ was released, I thought Keith Richards was the coolest man on the planet. And thought the song was the best in every way. Now I just don’t understand how he’s still alive!

Most influential songs for JB:

Painted Black, Waiting on a Friend, Brown Sugar, Angie and Time waits for no-one.
